sweet spot

(... a lesson in just saying no)

so as some of you may know, i'm attempting to give up sugar for a month or so. which, conveniently enough, coincided with the month including lent, so i can blame my sugar-free crankiness on my super piety. or something like that.

now, by sugar i really mean like sugary, desserty treats... they have been the downfall of my daily eating habits, and i know it's bad when a) i want to have dessert after breakfast, and b)the first day without treats i had a massive headache. so i feel like this is a step in the right direction, at least. that said, i'm not going to veto all the sweet treats in my life. for instance: cereal. and candyland. and cute boys. all start with c, and all are (mostly) sugarfree sweet treats!

to document my good behavior, i share the following story:

the non-dud** accompanied me to a birthday party for a good friend tonight. i wore cute jeans and boots, he wore jeans and a puffy vest.... aka, casual. which seemed fine, until we walked into the restaurant and realized that each table was already set with a tablecloth, multiple forks and double wine glasses for each guest. needless to say, we were a little underdressed.

we found our party upstairs, a (luckily) more casual setting, and mingled with birthday girl and friends. it was a good time, and then she lit the candles on a beautiful cake: chocolate raspberry cake with white, beautiful buttercream frosting, in the shape of a 4 and 2, outlined in fresh raspberries. she blew them out, and all friends grabbed a piece and indulged; including my date (in front of my face). all these people smacking their lips and licking their forks, the birthday girl begging me to have one bite ("it's the first cake i've ever made!" she told me), and still i refrained. i instead ate an extra parmesean ravioli served in a spoon. take THAT, peer pressure! (in fact, i did take that: there is an untouched piece of birthday cake in my freezer, waiting patiently for april 24).

so in case you're keeping count, it's kaci 1, sugar 0...

to celebrate, non-dud and i went to the shoppe on colfax to finisht the date with cereal and board games. so romantic!!  he bought me a big bowl of golden grahams and cocoa puffs with strawberries and soy milk (yum!) and he had a bowl of cookie crisp and cocoa puffs and marshmallows and skim milk. we sat down at a table and he picked out our evening entertainment: candyland (how ironic on a no-sugar day) and connect four. later we played jumbo-card-gin-rummy....

an hour or so later, i was the queen of candyland, he was the champ of connect four, and he was winning at rummy. and, i had still resisted the window display stuffed to the brim with cupcakes: huge and mini size (you know i love mini!); flavors galore (samoa cookie, irish creme, chocolate peanut butter...) and fluffy frosting. i was feeling so strong!

now it's kaci 2, sugar 0. booya, grandma, booya.

i must add that this is really the end of my good behavior documentation. i have had a few slip ups (including a midnight cadbury cream egg i couldn't resist (thank you jnoble for being my supplier!), and a trip to froyo with aforementioned cute boy). so if you're still keeping score (why are you, btw?) then it's really like, kaci 2, sugar 7. or something.

good thing i have over a full month to get back on the wagon...

** sidenote: he's been around long enough, he needs a new name- a legit blog name.suggestions?
