the best part of waking up...

(...was Kenya in my cup)

last summer i went to africa. we hung out in the slums of mathare, and didn't do anything glamorous... daily treats included things like little fried mandazis every morning and washing our feet after a long day. one treat we did find, though, when we weren't working, was this american-ized restaurant called java house. michelle and i marvelled in the deliciousness of fresh salads and ice cubes in our drinks. the best treat, though, was what the restaurant was known for: java. yummy, organic, delicious kenyan coffee- from kenya, in kenya. deLISH. obviously, this was something i knew i had to take home for a treat! i bought a bag of decaf for me, and a bag of regular for my parents, which i gave them at christmas last year.

i've saved my half pound of decaf whole african beans, moving them with me from dahlia to spruce oh so carefully. although i wanted to display the cool bag, i knew it was better to keep it in a dark, cool cupboard, away from my eyes. because i bought it whole bean, it was easy to save, and remain relatively fresh.  i haven't had any of it-mostly because i don't have a bean grinder and everytime i think i'm ready to drink it, i remember that i have to grind it up, and feel at a loss. until, this weekend. when i remembered the oh so magic, magic bullet.

that's right, this bullet of magic will not only make tasty morning smoothies, but it will blend homemade vegetable soup (broccoli cheese is my favorite right now), grate cheese, and grind coffee.

so my not so special/average sunday treat this weekend was: kenyan coffee. from kenya. in denver. amazing.
