(...help)
sunday the africa girls and i went to the denver rescue mission to help prep and serve dinner. i love volunteering, and don't do it often enough. it's especially fun to volunteer with fun people you love, which these africa girls definitely are. i joined them in the kitchen, washing strawberries, cutting fruit and then unwrapping doughnuts and pastries and laying them out on large trays for the morning. we chatted and caught up, i was a little late (surprise surprise) so i didn't have one particular job, i just floated between lots of different things and different people. eventually, the dinner was ready and we got behind the serving line (hair nets, latex gloves and all) and i served some wilty looking salad to the men in the program, about 30 in all (proudly i'd say about half wanted the salad, and only about a third actually took the cookies next to me. loved seeing healthy choices, even in disparity!).
however, i was disappointed with one thing: this cookie that i found on the shelf for breakfast pastries. now, i'm not disapointed that they are given the option to eat cookies for breakfast (hey, they are just getting off the streets and brave enough to join the mission: if it were up to me, they could have cookies for every meal!! {and maybe some salad?}). the disappointing part of the cookie is obvious. just look at it.
what.
the.
heck.
